Today Nokia announced a new low-cost touchscreen device for the masses, the Nokia 5228. Equipped with a basic 2 megapixel camera, a 3.2” touch-screen, a 3.5 mm audio jack and running on the old S60 5th Edition, the 5228 is definitely dedicated to the smartphone-starters and is a entry level device. Of course one can access all the Ovi services such as the Ovi Store or Ovi Messaging. According to the press release, the battery in the 5228 is strong enough for 33 hours of music playback. As with other S60 5th Edition devices, you can have up to 20 contacts on the homescreen. The 5228 will be available in July 2010 at retail price of 139€ incl. taxes.
In terms of its look, it is really similar to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and even more to the 5230. Actually, I do not see a difference between the 5230 and the new 5228. Specs wise, however, it is not as good as the 5230, especially since it does not have GPS . Frankly, I don’t know if we need such a device, especially running on S60 5th Edition.
