Symbian 101: You don’t need to convert videos or download VLC player for your Nokia
Another prowess that these Symbian^3 devices possesses is the support for wide range of video codecs. The most common and widely used today are Sorenson Spark, and the Xvid and DivX codecs which are under on MPEG-4 video and audio compression method. We would see these type codecs mostly from our P2P files like movies and on social site like YouTube. Of course, the benefits of this feature are very essential to every user.
UPDATE inside!
The first freedom that you will have is the freedom from conversion. It means that you don’t need to convert videos as your smartphone’s player will be able to play it.
The second thing that you’ll love is skipping your app-hunting session. So, forget those player that you think that you will need on playing your movies.
If we would consider the bonus point then it is on the flash support both in browser and player. Viewing youtube videos on mobile web is very convenient but when you got to desktop version it’s quite laggy. But of course, media player supports flash videos that you downloaded from these kinds of social sites.

Nokia C6-01, sleek and smart for everybody
My N8 working swiftly even if i’m playing movies on it. Great job Nokia. Kudos!
Great to see Nokia catching up to what the i8910 (aka ‘the forgotten phone’) was doing two years ago.
N900 anyone…?
Fair point. However both devices were (are) sidelined models. Both better than the ‘high street’ offerings, but ignored by the masses. Shame really.
Sorry, but this is not correct in a long shot. When I (legally, I must add), make a copy of a DVD there is no way WITHOUT converting the file to play the MPEG-2 file on my nokia N8, please enlighten me on how I can play this file without VLC (is that available anyway?) or converting it to MPEG-4?
Please help me!
Hi. You don’t need to convert. Just transfer the files to your phone and you will see it on your gallery and you play it successfully.
agreed… i have c7 and doesn’t have to convert anything..even .mkv files works flawlessly on my smartphone
You all don’t get the point. I have been searching for more than two hours. I can’t play MPEG-2 (Specifically MPEG-2, NOT MPEG-4, NOT avi, and NOT mkv) I am shocked that this device can play HD, can play mpeg4 but CAN’T PLAY MPEG-2!!!! How is that possible!!. It’s an old codec. Why it’s not supported?. Moreover, I couldn’t find any application to do that. Even the core player doesn’t support MPEG-2. Now I know why people switch to android.
The Update On videos does not appear on my phone yet. I’m in US.
Also, I cannot play any videos without converting. If i don’t convert only sound comes out.
Also the videos match the specifications above.
Please try to download the Nokia Software Updater from BetaLabs Nokia.
Use that program to check for updates. Your phone might be using an old firmware or something. Hope this will help you.

I have some files Divx and Xvid files that Nokia plays but for some it says “can’t play media file”, yet it does manage to generate a thumbnail for them.
How is that possible?
Hi. Do you have the latest update for video?
Try this one http://symbianworld.org/8227-nokia-n8-nokia-c7-nokia-c6-01-nokia-e7-videomovies-subtitles-support-update-sub-srt-format/
Yeah, I did. It works great for subtitles.
Any idea how is that my N8 can generate a thumbnail for a video, but not be able to play it? It failed on “Mr. Bean the ultimate collection”(XVID), and a few other..
No sound, no video(without sound)- nothing, just “can’t play media file”
did you find any solution to your problem ? if you do please reply
