Qt 4.6.0 for Symbian “Colossus” beta-release

15. October 2009 at 00:55

Today Nokia and Qt released the Beta version of Qt 4.6.0. Qt is a cross-platform application and UI framework. Using Qt, one can write applications once and deploy them across desktop, mobile and embedded operating systems without rewriting the source code. The beta runs on S60 3rd Edition as well as 5th Edition devices. I’ve installed it on my Nokia N97 and it looks really impressive. The focus of this release has been to stabilize the Symbian port, as well as adding a backend for the Phonon multimedia library enabling simple audio and video playback. The “Colossus” beta-release contains QtCore, QtTest, QtGui, QtNetwork, QtScript, QtSvg, QtWebKit, QtXML and Phonon as well as documentation and examples and demo.

Qt 4.6.0

To download Colossus straight to your phone point your phone’s browser to qt.nokia.com/phonedemo. For best performance we recommend to install in Phone memory.

Vlingo for S60 3rd& 5th Edition: Use Your Phone With the Power of Your Voice

6. October 2009 at 11:43

Vlingo by you.

Have you been wondering why there are more and more people talking to their phones? Giving their devices orders like: “send SMS to Norman, message hello how are you?” or “open File Manager.” Vlingo Corporation has launched their voice application, Vlingo, which allows user to instantly send a text messages and emails, call contacts, search the Web, create a “note to self” and much more, simply by speaking to your compatible S60 device. The service is available for free but can also be upgraded to a Plus Version. However, I’ll come back to both these versions later on. First I want to explain how to get Vlingo and how it works.

How to: Play Old School Games like Sonic on your S60 handset

17. July 2009 at 13:50

Do you remember games like Sonic The Hedgehog? More than 10 years ago games by Sega were really popular and I believe they still are. If you would like to play these games on your S60 handset today is your lucky day. I’ve found an emulator which allows you to play .smd and other files. Smd is a rom file for the sega megadrive. This tutorial works on both, S60 3rd and 5th edition handsets. However, as you need keys to control the game the Nokia N97 is the only S60 5th Edition device which you can use.

Firmware: Nokia N86 updated to v11.043 and N85 to v.30.019

6. July 2009 at 18:16

This is indeed a really busy time for both Nokia and us bloggers. In the last days the N96, E71, E66 as well as the E51 received a new firmware update. Now the N86 has been updated to version v11.043. It’s pretty easy updating it. You can use either the OTA (Over The Air) method or download it via the Nokia Software Updater. Like almost all new handset it also features UDP (User Data Preservation), so that all data and information stays on your handset. Along with the N86 also the N85 has been updated to v30.019. This firmware update is also available via the NSU and OTA. Unfortunately, we do not have a changelog but I assume that bugs have been fixed and improved. More over, the overall performance of the N86 has been improved and the gallery is ways more faster. All About Symbian says:

This brings official Ovi Store compatibility, camera tweaks and the usual early firmware bug fixes and improvements.
